When is my child ready for lessons?
Children may begin piano study at age 4 or whenever they are capable of focusing for up to five minutes as the teacher is demonstrating skills. Curriculum for younger beginners (ages 4-6) includes various activities such as plush characters, movement, a listening CD, and coloring worksheets to keep interest level high. Elementary age curriculum (ages 7-12) is the newest, top-rated pedagogical method that incorporates themes from children's social world.
Voice students may begin in the middle school years after the voice has dropped for boys and has become richer for girls.
Teenagers and adults are always encouraged to begin either piano or voice lessons, which will be tailored specifically to the individual's interest areas.

How much will my child need to practice?
Young beginner piano students are encouraged to practice 15 minutes a day, which includes both keyboard practice and workbook reinforcement.
Older beginners can typically move at a faster pace and would therefore need between 20-30 minutes of practice each day.
Intermediate students will progress well with around 30-45 minutes of daily practice time.
Voice students need around 20-30 minutes of practice each day.
Though practicing each day prepares the student best, at least 5 days of practice are expected each week. Of course, we tailor all expectations to meet the needs of the students.

How can I help my child be successful?
Parents are not required to sit in on lessons, but encouragement for home practice is necessary. The teacher will send weekly notes about what the child should focus on in his or her home practice. Additionally, parents should ensure that students are completing workbook assignments (10 minutes or less a week).
